Transfer Portfolio

A transfer portfolio is a summary of accomplishments which demonstrate a student’s academic achievement and willingness to go above and beyond the minimal requirements to earn a college degree. Listed below are some of the selective programs that Bristol Community College offers to students to enhance their transfer portfolios. Four-year colleges and universities as well as scholarship committees view participation in these programs as evidence of academic excellence.

Presidential Scholars Program

The Presidential Scholars Program (PSP) is a selective program for high achieving students who have recently graduated from high school.  Presidential Scholars receive expert transfer guidance that will enhance transfer to a competitive college or university including assistance with transcript review, transfer course selection and advisement, college search strategies, college application assistance, and scholarship opportunities.  Presidential Scholars can also take advantage of the many transfer articulation agreements available at BCC. The agreements ensure that transfer students who graduate from BCC enter the four-year institutions as juniors. All degree credits transfer, saving students time and money.

To qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

  • Acceptance to BCC as a full-time student
  • Competitive SAT scores or placement in the top 20 percent of high school class
  • Commitment to transferring to a private institution
  • Recommendation from a Guidance Counselor or other appropriate high school official

Phi Theta Kappa

Phi Theta Kappa is the world’s oldest, largest, and most prestigious association of community college honor students.  Membership in PTK affords access to more benefits than any other student organization. Academic excellence is recognized with the Golden Key Membership Pin, membership certificate, identification card and the privilege of wearing a gold stole at graduation that sets apart Phi Theta Kappa members.  In addition, members are eligible to apply for designated PTK scholarships.  To be considered for membership in BCC’s local chapter, a student must have a minimum grade point average of 3.50, be enrolled in a degree program and have earned 24 credits at BCC.  Phi Theta Kappa membership is a special honor afforded to a small group of outstanding students.

Commonwealth Honors Program

The Commonwealth Honors Program (CHP) at BCC offers intellectually challenging experiences to highly motivated and gifted students in every discipline. The program allows students to customize the honors experience to meet their own individual needs and desires. Students have the opportunity to work one-on-one with faculty members, crafting intellectually stimulating experiences. CHP Scholars receive a cash recognition award equal in value to 15 credits of in-state tuition and fees.

For more information please visit the Commonwealth Honors Program Web site here at BCC.

Service-Learning

Service-Learning matches student learning experiences and career goals with community needs.  Students work with a faculty member to create a volunteer project or activity within a BCC course. The goal is to address real community needs and use the activity to earn academic credit. Service-Learning gives students the chance to help others, develop marketable, résumé-building skills, and become more informed citizens.

Students in Service-Learning at BCC have tutored students in area elementary, middle, and high schools; helped clean up local waterways; and translated important documents into other languages. There are countless ways to help area residents build better lives while learning beneficial skills for the student’s future.

For more information please visit the Service-Learning Web site here at BCC.
