Enrollment and Academic Information
F-1 visa students must be enrolled in 12 credits each semester (not including summer) in order to maintain full-time status. Students may be authorized to drop below full-time enrollment if they qualify. The recommendation for a reduced course load must be approved by the PDSO or DSO (Dean of Admission or Registrar) in advance of dropping a class. There are very few exceptions to the full-time enrollment rule – medical condition, completion of the program of study the previous semester. The less-than full-time request authorization form must be completed in its entirety, and is available in the Registrar’s Office. The form must be completed, signed and approved before any action be taken by the student.
Distance Learning (Online Courses)
International students (those with an F-1 visa) may utilize just one online course toward the completion of their program of study in the fall or during the spring. Only 3 of your 12 credit enrollment requirement may be online. Since the summer is considered an optional term, no restrictions apply, provided that you’re a continuing student. The summer is not your first semester as an international student.
Withdrawing From a Class
If you plan to withdraw from a class after the add/drop period has passed, you will need to see the Registrar first. Be aware that the Department of Homeland Security does not routinely approve of students dropping below full-time enrollment status.
