Featuring Works by Fulltime and Adjunct Faculty
From the Art and Design Programs

Welcome to the Grimshaw-Gudewicz Art Gallery’s
second art faculty exhibition. Occurring every third
year, this exhibition brings together many of the faculty
who currently teach in the art and design programs
here at the College. By nature, such an exhibition
assembles a diverse array of artists many of whom actively
exhibit their work through regional, national, and
international venues. Fourteen full- and part-time
faculty members participated in this year’s show,
and their works provide an opportunity for our community
to take a look at the artistic breadth of the faculty
who teach here. Artist/teachers in this exhibition
are David Barnes, Gary Barten, Will DiBello, Denise
Donatelli, Elizabeth Dooher, Erik Durant, Charles Dwyer,
Kathleen Hancock, Glenn LaVertu, Ron Lister, Joy McLaughlin,
Kent Millard, Marisa Millard, and Amber Scoon.
David Barnes holds a BFA in painting from the University
of New Hampshire and received his MFA in painting from
UMASS Dartmouth. Awards include “Best of Show” from
the Newport Art Museum’s Annual Juried Members
Exhibit 2007. He was also a 2007 finalist for the Robert
and Margaret MacColl Johnson Fellowship. Recent shows
include New Art 2007, MPG Contemporary Gallery, Brandeis
University; Works on Paper, Providence Art Club, 2007;
As Seen on TV. New Paintings by David Barnes, Drury
and Grosvenor Center for the Arts, Middletown, RI,
2006; and Opening the Season, Virginia Lynch Gallery,
Tiverton, RI, 2004. He teaches introductory and advanced
drawing courses.
Gary Barten received a BFA from Tyler School of Art,
Temple University in Philadelphia and holds an MFA
in painting from Washington University, St Louis, MO.
Selected exhibitions include Conversations in Black
and White, Hartwick College, Oneonta, NY, 2003; Surface
and Space, Providence College, Providence, RI, 2001
and a two-person show at Sticks Gallery, Berkley, CA,
1999. He has had residencies at Dorland Mountain Arts
Colony, 1998 and 2000-01 and at Byrdcliffe Artist Colony,
1995 and
1996. He teaches introductory drawing, two-dimensional
design, and art history courses.
Will DiBello teaches two-dimensional design and art
history courses. He holds an MFA in painting from Rhode
Island School of Design and a BFA from Temple University,
Tyler School of Art. In 2002 he was awarded a residency
fellowship through the Terra Foundation for the Arts
at the Museum of Fine Arts at Giverny, France. Recent
exhibitions include Trans AM, Newton Center for the
Arts, Newton, MA, 2007; Global Pop, Boston Center for
the Arts, Boston, MA, 2006; and Boston Drawing Project,
Bernard Toale Gallery, Boston, MA, 2006.
Denise Donatelli is a long time instructor of photography
at BCC. Educated at SMU and RISD, Donatelli’s
work has been exhibited in venues throughout the region,
including the Phoenix Gallery, Artworks and the Westport
Library, A professional freelance photographer, Donatelli’s
photos have been featured in brochures and informational
materials for regional civic organizations such as
the Fall River Historic Preservation Commission and
the Southeastern Massachusetts Regional Transit Authority.
Elizabeth Dooher holds an MFA from UMASS Dartmouth,
North Dartmouth, MA and a BA in sculpture from The
College of Wooster, Wooster, OH. She teaches introductory
and intermediate drawing and two-dimensional design
courses. Last year she was the recipient of the Silver
Shield Award at BCC. Recent exhibitions include a solo
called Residue, Gallery 244, New Bedford, MA, 2005;
Inviting Response, New Bedford Art Museum, New Bedford,
MA, 2006; and Outdoor Sculpture Exhibition, Franconia
Sculpture Park, Shafer, MN, 2004.
Erik Durant received an MFA in sculpture from UMASS
Dartmouth and a BA in history from Southern Connecticut
State University. He teaches two-dimensional design,
art history and introductory and advanced drawing courses
at BCC. Recent exhibitions include Strange Figures:
New Work by Erik Durant, Artworks, New Bedford, MA,
2007; Sample, Artworks, New Bedford, MA, 2006; Funktion,
Artworks, New Bedford, MA, 2006; and New Bedford Open
Studios, New Bedford, MA, 2005-06.
Charles Dwyer holds an MFA in painting from Boston
University and a BFA from the Rhode Island School of
Design. He is a past Fellow in Painting at the American
Academy of Rome. In addition to teaching at BCC he
is currently a Visiting Professor at Bridgewater State
College. Recent exhibitions include shows at Boulevard
Studio and Gallery, Newport, RI, 2002; Premier Etage
Gallery, Newport, RI, 2001; Fidelity Investments Juried
Competition, Providence Art Club, Providence, RI, 2003.
He teaches art history courses.
In addition her position as gallery director, Kathleen
Hancock teaches introductory drawing and printmaking
courses at BCC. She received a BFA from Western Kentucky
University, Bowling Green, KY and holds an MFA in printmaking
from Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, NY. Recent exhibitions
include a solo at Happy White Gallery, St Andrews School,
Barrington, RI, 1999, and group shows include On 40
at 40, Grimshaw- Gudewicz Art Gallery, Bristol Community
College, 2006, Paper Arts, Gallery 401, Providence,
RI, 2003; 40th Anniversary Retrospective, Bristol Art
Museum, Bristol, RI, 2003 and the Art League of Rhode
Island’s Inaugural Exhibition, The Bristol Art
Museum, Bristol, RI, 2002.
Glenn LaVertu received an MFA in sculpture from the
Rhode Island School of Design and a BA in art from
Central Connecticut State University. He was a resident
at Vermont Studio Center in 2001. Recent exhibitions
include The Drawing Show, St. Rose Center for the Arts,
Albany, NY, 2006; Where Art Thou?, Woods-Gerry Gallery,
Providence, RI, 2006; Between Experience and Understanding,
Korn Gallery, Drew University, Madison, NJ. He teaches
sculpture and three-dimensional design courses at the
College.
Both Ron Lister’s BFA and MFA are from Miami
University, Oxford, OH. Since 2000 he has played music
with The Alleged Ceili Band an Irish dance band out
of Cumberland, RI. He is the author of Drawing with
Pastels and Designing Cards and Paper Products both
published by Prentice Hall. In 2002 the Grimshaw-Gudewicz
Art Gallery mounted a one-man retrospective of his
work. He teaches painting and drawing classes and was
most recently the art program coordinator here at BCC.
Joy McLaughlin received a BFA in textiles from the
Rhode Island School of Design. In addition to teaching
Art for the Child and Art Exploration courses at BCC,
she is also the arts instructor at St. Lawrence School
in North Providence, RI. Recent exhibitions include
Senior Invitational Exhibition: Orientation Grey, Woods-Gerry
Gallery, Providence RI, 2002. Current projects in development
are: "The Textile Space" a fully outfitted
textile facility and think-tank environment for artist
use, and "MillWinds" an installation project
focusing on environmental sustainability as a means
of community regeneration in former mill towns of New
England.
R. Kent Millard currently teaches multimedia design
at BCC where he has also taught classes in photography,
web design and computer graphics. He has a BFA in Photographic/Electronic
Imaging from the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth.
A web designer for almost 10 years, Kent maintains
a design practice with his wife, focusing on both print
and web design projects. Recent work includes web sites
for a large doctor’s group in Fall River and
for a fine artist in Providence.
Marisa Millard coordinates the Graphic Design, Web
Design & Media Arts, and Animation & Motion
Graphics programs at BCC. She teaches classes in graphic
design, as well as colloquia and seminars for fine
arts and design majors. She has an MFA in Graphic Design
from University of North Texas, a BFA in Graphic Design
and a BA in English from Texas Christian University.
A graphic designer for over 20 years, Marisa maintains
a design practice with her husband, focusing on both
print and web design projects. Recent work includes
the BCC catalog cover, a series of booklets for Teaching
American History and a web site for a large doctor’s
group in Fall River.
Amber Scoon recently accepted the position of art
program director and chair of the visual arts program
here at the College. She received her MFA from the
American University’s MFA program in Italy, graduating
in 2004. She holds a BS from New York University. Before
coming to BCC she was Visiting Professor at Chautauqua
Institute of the Arts and prior to that held a faculty
position at the American University in Rome. Exhibitions
include World Earth Day / Video Exhibition, Scope Basel
Biennale, Basel, Switzerland, 2007; Floating, Club
Art e Ideias, Lisbon, Portugal, 2007; and Circle, King
Gallery, College of Southern Idaho, 2006. She was a
recipient of the Lugar Comum Experimental Arts Grant,
2007 and was awarded an NEA grant 2006. |
