| BCC Art Program
Faculty Exhibition 2004
October 14 – November 14, 2004
With this first ever art program faculty exhibition,
the art gallery hopes to establish a triennial exhibition
- one that will provide an opportunity for the college
and the community to take a look at the artistic breadth
of the faculty who teach in the art program. By nature,
such an exhibition brings together a diverse array of
artists, many who actively exhibit their work through
regional, national and international venues. Artist/teachers
in this exhibition are Betty Ashley, David Barnes, Gary
Barten, Matt Castigliego, Christine Dehne, Denise Donatelli,
Rene Gagnon, Kathleen Hancock, John Hubenthal, Lucky
Leone, Ron Lister, Bruce McColl, Kent Millard, Marisa
Millard, Kelly Pelissier, JeanNette Weiser and Denyse
Wilhelm.
Betty Ashley is a graduate of North Adams State
College with an MA in art education from UMASS Dartmouth.
For many years she has supervised the design and construction
of scenery and props for a community children’s
theater arts program. She has also taught classes in
scrimshaw, calligraphy, basket weaving and traditional
crafts for adult evening education programs. At BCC
she teaches Art For The Child and Art Exploration courses.
David Barnes holds a BFA in painting from the University
of New Hampshire and received his MFA in painting from
UMASS Dartmouth in 1994. Awards include “Best
of Show” from the Newport Art Museum’s Annual
Juried Members Exhibit 1997 and 2001. Recent solo shows
include David Barnes New Paintings and Drawings, Newport
Art Museum, 2002 and group shows include Opening the
Season, Virginia Lynch Gallery, Tiverton, RI, 2004 and
New Landscapes, Boulevard Gallery, Newport, RI, 2003.
He teaches introductory and advanced drawing courses.
Gary Barten received a BFA from Tyler School
of Art, Temple University in Philadelphia and holds
an MFA in painting from Washington University, St Louis,
MO. Selected exhibitions include Conversations in Black
and White, Hartwick College, Oneonta, NY, 2003; Surface
and Space, Providence College, Providence, RI, 2001
and a two-person show at Sticks Gallery, Berkley, CA,
1999. He has had residencies at Dorland Mountain Arts
Colony, 1998 and 2000-01 and at Byrdcliffe Artist Colony,
1995 and
1996. He teaches art history courses.
Matt Castigliego received his BFA in graphic
design from Swain School of Design. His firm, Matt Castigliego
Illustration and Design, works with clients such as
Morgan Stanley Dean Witter, Bank RI, Rhode Island College,
Brown University, St. Mary Academy-Bayview and The Boys
and Girls Club of Pawtucket. He teaches illustration
courses.
Christine Dehne teaches graphic design and
drawing courses at BCC. She holds a BA in philosophy
from Tufts University, Medford, MA; a BFA from School
of the Museum of Fine Arts Boston; and received her
MFA in new genre studies from the University of Arizona,
Tucson, AZ. Selected exhibitions/screenings include

Denise Donatelli is a long time instructor
of photography at BCC. Educated at SMU and RISD, Donatelli’s
work has been exhibited in venues throughout the region,
including the Phoenix Gallery, Artworks and the Westport
Library, A professional freelance photographer, Donatelli’s
photos have been featured in brochures and informational
materials for regional civic organizations such as the
Fall River Historic Preservation Commission and the
Southeastern Massachusetts Regional Transit Authority.
Rene Gagnon is an alumnus of Bristol Community
College. He holds a BFA in visual communication from
Massachusetts College of Art, Boston, MA. His business,
Mass Media Works, is a full service multimedia graphics
studio with clients such as Foxwoods Resort and Casino
and Assonet Art Publishing. He teaches Computer Graphics
courses.
In addition her job as gallery director, Kathleen
Hancock teaches drawing courses at BCC. She received
a BFA from Western Kentucky University, Bowling Green,
KY and holds an MFA in printmaking from Pratt Institute,
Brooklyn, NY. Recent exhibitions include a solo at Happy
White Gallery, St Andrews School, Barrington, RI, 1999,
and recent group shows include Paper Arts, Gallery 401,
Providence, RI, 2003; 40th Anniversary Retrospective,
Bristol Art Museum, Bristol, RI, 2003 and the Art League
of Rhode Island’s Inaugural Exhibition, The Bristol
Art Museum, Bristol, RI 2002.
John Hubenthal teaches art history courses
at BCC. His BA in art history is from California State
University, Chico, CA. He also holds and MA in art history
from Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, VA
and is currently in the PhD program in art history at
Virginia Commonwealth University.
Lucky Leone teaches sculpture and three-dimensional
design courses at BCC. His BFA is from RISD and he holds
an MFA in sculpture/painting from San Diego State University,
San Diego, CA. Recent exhibitions include solos It’s
all downhill from here, St Andrew’s School, Middletown,
DE, 2002; Selected Series, McKillop Gallery, Salve Regina
University, Newport, RI, 2000 and group exhibitions
New Bedford Film Festival, New Bedford, MA, 2001 and
Lighten Up, Humor in Contemporary Art, DeCordova Museum,
Lincoln, MA, 2001. He is the recipient of the Silver
Shield Teaching Award, BCC, 2000.
In addition to teaching painting and drawing classes,
Ron Lister is art program director. Both his
BFA and MFA are from Miami University, Oxford, OH. Since
2000 he has played music with The Alleged Ceili Band
an Irish dance band out of Cumberland, RI. He is the
author of Drawing with Pastels and Designing Cards and
Paper Products both published by Prentice Hall. In 2002
the Grimshaw-Gudewicz Art Gallery mounted a one-man
retrospective of his work.
Bruce McColl received a B.A. from Brown University and
an MFA in painting from Wayne State University, Detroit,
MI. Recent solo exhibitions include Remnants, New England
College, Henniker, NH, 2004 and ArtWorks! Fellowship
Exhibition, ArtWorks!, New Bedford, MA, 2002. Group
exhibitions include In/Side/Out, Grimshaw-Gudewicz Art
Gallery, Bristol Community College, Fall River, MA,
2003; Premier Etage Gallery, Newport, 2002, RI. He teaches
two-dimensional design and art history courses. He is
also a recent recipient of a Pollack-Krasner Foundation
Grant and received an ArtWorks! Fellowship in painting
in 2002-03.
Kent Millard teaches a multimedia design course.
Marisa Millard teaches graphic design courses
in web and print media and coordinates the Graphic Design,
Web Design and Media Arts Programs.
Kelly Pelissier holds a BFA in photo/electronic
imaging and an MA in art education from UMASS Dartmouth.
She teaches a multitude of courses at BCC including
graphic and multimedia design and drawing courses. Prior
to coming to BCC she taught art courses at Duxbury High
School. She was a 1994-96 recipient of a Dwight D. Eisenhower
Grant during which she worked as a Technology Coordinator
and Educational Consultant with Artslinks.
JeanNette Wieser teaches printmaking, art history
and drawing courses at BCC. She holds a B.S. degree
from the University of Idaho and an MA and MFA in photography
from the University of Iowa, Iowa City, IA. Recent solo
exhibitions include Of the Particular, Frohring Gallery,
Hiram College, Hiram, OH, 2001 and group exhibitions
at the Fuller Museum of Art, International Women’s
Exhibition, Brocton, MA, 2001 and Three Times Eleven,
Addison Gallery, Clark University, Worcester, MA, 1997.
Denyse Wilhelm holds an MFA in painting from
UMASS Dartmouth, a B.S. in rehabilitation counseling
from Boston University and a B.A. in art history from
UMASS Dartmouth. In addition to her full time position
as counselor within the college’s Center for Developmental
Education, she teaches two-dimensional design and drawing
courses. Recent exhibitions include American Democracy
Under Siege, Hera Gallery, Wakefield, RI, 2003; Sol
Gallery, Providence, RI, 2003; Gallery 244, UMASS Dartmouth,
MA, 2000; and the Providence Art Club, Providence, RI,
1999.
