Rodgers Cyber Cafe Construction

The LRC invites you to come by and take a peek at the ongoing renovation to the Rodgers Cyber Cafe.  The grand opening will be Friday, November 7 at 10am.  The space will offer a comfortable learning environment with soft seating, 12 PC's, Laptop computing ports, and a lounge area. The new Cyber Cafe will offer vending machine services such as coffee and other foods.

In addition, the library will increase the amount of computers by 12, increasing the computers available to 40. There will be a new area for library instruction.  Please feel free to come by and see the ongoing progress.

Book Sale

The LRC's Eighteenth Annual Book Sale is just around the corner. The Book Sale will be the week of November 17-23.  As you may know, each year we sell books and other materials that have been donated to the LRC, but for one reason or another, were not added to the collection.

If you have been waiting to donate those boxes of books in your attic or office, now is the time!

Guidelines for donations: All books in good condition (including children's books and text books). Media: VHS/ CD/ DVD and books on tape. Please: no magazines or journals.

Please have materials to the LRC no later than Friday, November 14, 2008 at 4:00 p.m. Feel free to give Bob Rezendes a call at Ext. 2106 if you have any questions about donations or about the book sale.

Subject Guides

Subject Guides are available off the LRC Home page under Research Help.  Subject Guides are specific to a topic that is taught here on campus.  So far Melanie Johnson has added Art, Astronomy, Biology, Dental Hygiene, Nursing, and Style Manuals, as well as a Research Help page. These guides are multi-faceted and help with every step of the research process, from choosing a topic, writing a thesis statement, to gathering research materials and creating a bibliography.

Each topic within the subject is dedicated to the materials we have on campus to aid students in their research.  These guides are accessible from within the library, and from home as well.

Retirement at the LRC

Our warmest wishes go out to Paula Dube, who recently has left the BCC family to join the ranks of the retired.  She will be greatly missed for her service and dedication for 39 wonderful years.

Foundation Grant Awards

The BCC Foundation approved 12 grant requests submitted by LRC staff members. The total amount awarded to the LRC was $ 47,526. The funding received will help improves resources and services available to students and faculty members. LRC staff members would like to thank Liz McCarthy and Diane West for all their support and feedback during this application process.

RefWorks

RefWorks is an online research management and bibliography creator service.  Read below to find out more about RefWorks, or set up an instructional session with Melanie Johnson via email or by calling extension 2458 from your campus phone.

What is RefWorks and why would I want to use it?

• RefWorks is a citation manager, that is, software that keeps track of the sources you are using for your research and your own notes about them.

What are the main features of RefWorks?

• RefWorks is available for access off campus (Click here to log in to RefWorks), and allows each user a private account . (You must register the first time you use it.)
• RefWorks allows you to import references from the Learning Resources Center's Catalog and many electronic databases. You can conveniently compile a list of sources you intend to read--as you identify them--and save them online.
• RefWorks interacts with Microsoft Word (the “Write-N-Cite” feature) so that you can insert footnotes and a bibliography while you are writing your paper.
• RefWorks lets you annotate citations in your server space. You can take notes online.
