Bristol Community College to hold public meeting on proposal to arm campus police officers

Bristol Community College will hold an open public meeting on Monday, November 18, 2013, at 6 p.m. regarding a proposal to arm its campus police officers.

The College has been considering this proposal over the past year as part of its preparedness training and development of plans to protect life and property in an emergency. Members of the College community have been discussing it internally, and the College will host this public meeting to solicit community input.

Campus police officers at BCC are already sworn, academy-trained officers. They currently have a number of statutory powers as granted by the Commonwealth, including the power of arrest. The arming proposal includes full academy training in the use of firearms and other required testing.

The meeting is scheduled in the Ryckebusch Faculty/Staff Lounge in the Commonwealth College Center on the Fall River Campus.
