The Bristol Community College Theatre Rep. stages a production of Michael Ende’s MOMO at BCC’s Jackson Arts Center Theater Friday, April 26 and Saturday, April 27, from 7 – 8:30 p.m.
MOMO is directed by John Emigh, Professor Emeritus and former chair of the Department of Theatre Arts at Brown University. Mr. Emigh is a guest director while BCC Artistic Director Rylan Brenner is on sabbatical. Emigh is a director, performer, and acting teacher who has directed more than 70 plays in universities and in professional theatre, and has written extensively on the masked theatre and rituals of New Guinea, Bali, and India, as well as on Western theatrical practices. In 1974–75, he traveled in New Guinea, South Asia, and Indonesia, where he studied Balinese "topeng" masked dance with I Nyoman Kakul. Since then, he has made several more research trips to Asia, investigating the street jesters and court fools of Rajasthan, the use of masks in Eastern India, and the changing dynamics of performance in Bali. The production includes original Music by Nancy Rosenberg from Roger Williams University.
Michael Ende’s novel, MOMO, is a story about the precious nature of time, the importance of imagination, and the power of love. It is a book known and loved by children in Germany and has great popularity throughout continental Europe. Written for children, it is re-read and cherished by adults. The new adaptation for the theatre now makes the work available for the English speaking stage, brings to life the threatening Gray Men of the Time Bank, the remarkable orphan Momo who stands in their way, her allies Professor Hora and his magical tortoise Cassiopoeia, and many more unforgettable characters.
Tickets are $10 for the general public, $8 for faculty and staff, and $6 for students and seniors. The Bristol Community College Jackson Arts Center Theater is located at 777 Elsbree Street, Fall River, MA. Arrive early to take advantage of choice seating.
