Nursing Program Division of Health Sciences: Advanced Standing Options
Bristol Community College offers two ways for (LPNs) to earn advanced placement credits, the LPN-to-RN Bridge Program and the LPN Challenge of Fundamentals of Nursing. Read requirements to see which applies to you.

LPN-to-RN BRIDGE PROGRAM (Approximate Fee $700):
- For LPNs who have graduated within five years from one of five LPN schools – Diman Regional, Bristol-Plymouth, Upper Cape Cod Regional, Southeastern Regional Practical Nursing Program, or Tri Country RVTHS.
- Part I: Complete all pre-admission and pre-and co-requisite courses. Receive “B–“ or better on the pre-admission courses.
- Part II: After successful completion of the LPN-to-RN Bridge Program (approximately 3 weeks), the applicant will be awarded 16 credits for NUR 101 and NUR 102 and is eligible for entrance into the third semester of the nursing program and the nursing course: Nursing Care of the Adult I (NUR 201) on a space-available basis.
Prerequisites and more information
LPN CHALLENGE OF FUNDAMENTALS OF NURSING (Approximate Fee $150):
- For LPNs who graduated from LPN schools not listed above or for those LPNs who graduated more than five years ago.
- Part I: Complete all pre-admission and pre-and co-requisite courses. Receive “B–“ or better on the pre-admission courses.
- Part II: The applicants must take the Excelsior ― “Fundamentals of Nursing” challenge exam and pass with a score of “C” or better to demonstrate knowledge of theory.
- Part III: Perform and pass a lab demonstration to determine skill competency (approximately 2 days).
Once a passing score is attained (Part III), the applicant will be awarded 8 credits for NUR 101 and is eligible for entrance into the second semester of the nursing program, and the nursing course: Parent and Child Health (NUR 102) on a space-available basis.
NURSING TRANSFER CREDITS:
Nursing courses taken within the last three years. Please send syllabus and catalog for each nursing course to be evaluated to the Nursing Program Director at BCC. Successful applicants will be admitted on a space-available basis based on college GPA and/or course grades. BCC accepts a maximum of 34 transfer credits from regionally accredited colleges/universities.
Admission requirements (Deadline for applicant is February 1st)
General Admission Requirements:
- Complete the application process for admission to BCC.
- Hold a high school diploma or show evidence of a GED.
- Receive “B-” or better on the pre-admission courses.
- The Admissions Department determines acceptance of transferred Gen. Ed. Courses.
Advanced Standing for LPNs Admission Requirements:
- Graduate from an LPN Program.
- Hold current licensure as an LPN.
- LPN Challenge students must take the Excelsior ― “Fundamentals of Nursing” challenge exam and pass with a score of “C” or better.
- Priority will be given to applicants who are currently employed.
- Complete all pre-admission and pre-and co-requisite courses. Receive “B-” or better on the pre-admission courses.
- Meet health and immunization requirements/ health insurance.
- Pay for BCC malpractice insurance.
- Submit to a BCC CORI check and a 10 panel drug screening.
- Be BLS Certified by American Heart Association (Basic Life Support for Health Care Professionals). Certification must be valid for the duration of the program study.
- Meet all requirements of the program. See BCC Catalog.

Nursing Transfer Credits Requirements:
- General education courses—send official transcript to Admissions
- Nursing-specific courses taken within the last three years —send official transcript, catalog, & course syllabus to the Nursing Program Director at BCC.
