Nursing Program Admissions Requirements

The Nursing Program is a competitive program with selective admission requirements. A limited number of students are admitted to the Nursing Program. The college catalog describes the minimum requirements for admission to the program, as follows:

Applicants must have completed the following criteria (all coursework with a grade of B- or greater) to be considered for admission to the Nursing program:

  • High school or college/university Algebra I (or math options listed below)
    • Accuplacer Elementary Algebra placement test score of 72 or greater
    • Algebra 2 or Calculus 1
  • High School or college/university Chemistry (or chemistry option listed below)
    • Chemistry (AP [score of 3+] or college prep; with lab)
  • College Anatomy & Physiology 1(BIO-33 or the equivalent)
  • College English Composition 1(ENG-11 or the equivalent)
  • College General Psychology (PSY-51 or the equivalent)
  • Earn a composite score of 70 or greater on the Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) and possess an overall GPA of at least 3.0 [For more detailed TEAS information, please visit our website]
  • Priority will be given to applicants who have fulfilled all course requirements with a GPA of 3.50 or higher and a composite TEAS score of 70 or higher
  • Attend one mandatory health science admissions information session (Call Admissions at 508-678-2811 x2947 to sign up; seating is limited.)

Students applying to BCC with a GED or successful performance on an Ability To Benefit (“ATB”) test rather than with a high school diploma will need to take the required courses (listed above) at BCC and the TEAS exam before being considered for admission to the program.

Meeting these minimum criteria places the applicant in the selection pool but does not guarantee admission to the Nursing Program. Final selection will be based on the applicant pool and space available.

Most successful candidates have excelled in previous lab science and math courses in high school and/or college/university and have taken math and science courses above the minimum required to be considered for admission. The following BCC courses are particularly recommended in addition to the BIO-33 requirement for admission: BIO-34 and BIO-39. Many students admitted to the program have already successfully completed many of its required general and elective courses.

Review of completed applications begins each fall for the following fall/spring class and continues until spaces are filled. Applications which become complete after February 1 are not likely to be admitted to nursing for that year. Applicants must make sure that they have met the minimal requirements and completed their application (including all supporting documents such as transcripts) by that timeframe.
