Career Exploration/Realistic Job Preview Course

The Career Exploration and Realistic Job Preview Course is designed for learners close to achieving G.E.D. requirements who are thinking about a career in human services. 

This 20 hour, non-credit course provides and opportunity to explore careers in healthcare or human services. The curriculum emphasizes the academic skills necessary to be successful as an entry-level worker, includes content and case studies related to the field of human services, and provides an overview of further training in higher education. A special feature of the course involves an optional work experience component facilitated by an adult basic education career counselor. Participation in some activities of the program will require a minimum level of reading and writing.

Participants will take part in hands-on activities and discussions covering the following topics:

  • Career exploration
  • Career planning
  • Job searches
  • Resume writing
  • Interviewing skills
  • Customer service skills
  • Academic planning
  • Job shadowing preparation

This course will also include guest speakers who will address career, employment, and academic topics selected by students. The Career Services and Transitional Counselor will also meet with students to address concerns relating to employment, career training, and /or academic issues. Following successful completion of the course, students are eligible to participate in either job shadowing or internship placements in local human service agencies.
