Q: Where is the library located?
A: The Library is located on the first floor of the Farley LRC, building "A" in the center of the Fall River campus.


Q: Is the library open to the public?
A: Yes, the library is open to members of the community.

Q: Does the Library have computers for word processing?
A:  The library has ten computers with Microsoft Office.  Additional workstations are available in K-130.

Q: Can I send and receive email on LRC computers?
A:
  Yes, the LRC has computers with internet access where students can check their email.

Q: How many items can I check out at one time?
A:
  You may check out up to 5 books on the same subject and up to 10 books altogether.

Q: How do I renew materials?
A:  You may renew in person at the LRC, by telephone (ext 2105) or you may renew online using the online catalog.  In order to renew using the online catalog, click on the link below.

     From there, click on the tab that says "My account".  Click on "Renew My Materials".  You will be prompted for your ID (your barcode number located on the back of your LRC library card) and your PIN (the last four digits of your phone number).  Some materials may not be available for renewal; such as books with holds and videos.

Q: What is SAILS?
A:  SAILS Library Network is a non-profit consortium of public and school libraries in 40 communities throughout southeastern Massachusetts. We have in-house over 100,000 print and non-print materials, and can access through the SAILS Library Network over 2,000,000 print and non-print materials at 49 area public and school libraries.

Q: How do I find out if the Library owns a particular book or video?
A: Our on-line catalog in the LRC searches for materials located within the Library automatically.  It also allows you to search for materials in other libraries in the SAILS network.

Q:  The book I need has been checked out.  How can I get it?
A:  You may place a hold on it by clicking on "hold" located on the upper right hand side of the screen.  From there you will be prompted for your library bar code number and PIN. If you can not remember your pin contact the circulation desk, ext. 2105.  The LRC will call you when your book has arrived.

Q: How will I know when my item arrives?  
A:  A staff member from the LRC will call you when your item arrives.

Q: How long does it take materials that I have placed on hold to arrive?
A:  If at the time you put the hold on your material it was on the shelf at that library, it should take about 3-4 days.  However, if the material has a hold on it or was already checked out, it may take longer.

Q: Can I request videos, CD's, DVD's and audiotapes from other SAILS libraries?
A:  Yes, as long as you have a valid accessBCC card or a SAILS library card.

Q: Do you charge fines for overdue materials?
A:  We do not charge for overdue print materials.  We do charge an overdue fee for CD's, DVD's, and videos. $1/day/item.

Q: Can I check out magazines?
A:  No, magazines may not be checked out of the LRC.  Photocopiers are available.

Q: Can I get audio visual materials from libraries outside of the SAILS network?
A: No, AV materials are only available from other SAILS libraries.

Q: How do I get a book that is not in the SAILS network?
A:  If the book is from a Massachusetts state owned college or university, you may check out that book using your accessBCC card or SAILS library card at the schools library.  Or you may fill out an Interlibrary loan book request form located at the reference desk or the online form.

     You will need a valid accessBCC card for this transaction.

Q: How can I find out what magazines you subscribe to?
A: You may either ask to see the periodical list at the reference desk or go to the library's home page and click on "Periodicals"

Q: Where do I get books/articles my professor has put on reserve?
A: You may find reserved items at the Circulation desk.

Q: What is microfilm?
A:
Photographic recordings of printed pages or other graphics on film. A device, a "reader" is required to view the images; copies of which can be made for use and study.  Back files of many of our newspapers and periodicals are stored in this form.

Q: What is a database?
A: A  large collection of  journal and newspaper articles  organized especially for rapid search and retrieval (as by a computer).

Q:  Why would I use a database instead of the internet?
A: A database can be a more valid source than an internet website. 

Q: Can I download material onto my floppy at the LRC?
A: Yes, The computers in the LRC will allow you to save to a floppy, but not the hard drive.
